Gesture- Move like that by Turtle-Arts Gesture- Move like that by Turtle-Arts
Okay Crew, I've had quite a few of you asking me to do an anatomy/face tutorial... which this is not. DX I promise I will do one, but it'll have to wait till I'm off semester when I have more free time. But in the meantime, I thought maybe some of you might like to see how I do my human drawings before they get their actual detail! ^^ So here's a gesture sheet done specifically for my boy Gild. Gesture drawings are great practice and an important step in fleshing out a character's manner of movement! Also, they really help you practice your anatomy without having to worry too much about detail. Keep in mind, a gesture typically takes about five to ten minutes to draw, or less. Any longer and it usually starts to get too detailed. If you have trouble drawing at least a basic human frame in five minutes, then you might consider working on your speed drawing through shorter, 10-30 second gestures!

Well, I'd say if you're going for gestures, they key is to just try and keep the detail as limited as possible. Gesture drawing is more about the overall body line and shape than the details. I've always refered to this particular style as "body boxing" where you just try to break up the body into it's basic shapes, or "boxes." And you can simplify it even more than what I do here. I've seen some people who just doa literal box for the torso and waist, and basically just lines for the limbs. Whatever helps you get the gesture more quickly and more accurately. But really, it's just repetition and practice that's going to help with these. :nod:

I don't like drawing human portraits. Especially the realistic kind (they're so hard)! But I LOVE drawing gesture. :D
My weakness is that I am reluctant to draw details, so my drawings look kinda...unfleshed out even after I put on the clothing or draw the facial features (which are usually simplified)..

Ugh yeah, realistic portraits are not my cup of tea. XD I do like doing portraits though, in general. I enjoy drawing faces. :>

How do you know what gestures to go with? I sometimes find it hard to think of a gesture and other times i dont find it hard but most of the time I can't think of gestures...maybes cause there are too many options D:

Hmm... well, usually most of the time it just has to do with what emotion I want that character to be portraying. Because that translates into their body language, which tends to form the gesture from there. Sometimes I go in specifically knowing what pose I want, and other times it's just kind of whatever works.  I don't think you should worry too much about getting caught up on the subtleties of a gesture if they're not vital to what emotion you're portraying.

I dunno, that's kind of a hard question to answer. So sorry if my reply isn't that helpful. ^^;

Well I've taken a couple figure drawing courses, but the only book I had was more of a medical anatomy source. It was just a lot of images of muscle and bone structure. I would say the best way to learn things like this would just be to draw people from life. My school has open figure lab every friday where we can go and draw models and such.

You don't have to be in a class to draw people from life. Just try going to a public place and discretely drawing the people around you. You'll have to be quick, but you'll get a lot of good, really natural gestures. Or ask a friend to pose for you if you'd like a more individual model.
