Oscar win and disapointment for animation

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 24, 2013, 6:15 PM
So, watching the oscars right now. They just did animated short and feature film, and I was super happy that Paperman got the award for short film. It totally deserved that one. But not gonna lie, I was  rather disappointed that Brave beat Wreck-it Ralph . I mean, Brave was okay, and yeah it's really pretty and all, but to me it was just kind of an "alright" movie.  And I know I'm not alone in thinking that because most people that I've talked to about Brave seem to feel the same way- that it's good, but it's nothing super great. At least as far as story goes.

And when I ask people "Why do you like Brave?" and the only answer I get is "I like the girl's hair." and nothing about the story except maybe "the bears are cute" then I think it's safe to say that Brave isn't necessarily the "best" animated movie of the year. :/

  • Mood: Neutral
  • Listening to: You can be all kinds of emotional- the lone bellow
  • Reading: Harry Potter Page to Screen (loooove this book)
  • Watching: Oscars
  • Eating: Cheese cake. mmmmmm

Yes, I feel the same way. I mean, I love Pixar but WiR had a much better story especially since the trailers had more relation to the movie unlike in Brave where the trailers made it seem like Merida was going to some distant land with her horse (which I loved and was expecting just that). But in the end she hardly left that far from her home and it wasn't for long either! So there wasn't much transition in locations and most all of it was set in the castle (I don't like it when movies just stay in one place for the whole film it gets boring :/ ).

Yes, Brave did have the best visuals and the musical score was awesome but it left me wanting a lot more in the end! The story felt a little rushed honestly not to mention that Brave is from Pixar and they have done much better in the past.

RiW had a great story line, explored different environments and had some unexpected surprises thrown in. I think it did much better than Brave and even though it's visuals weren't as superb as Brave's, they were still nice and smooth.

On a side note: I agree with others that Guardians wasn't even nominated. It had a deep story line much darker than normal for a kids film and had really great visuals too.

I did not know that and am kind of disappointed that Wreck It Ralph didn't win over Brave! The story is a lot better in Wreck It Ralph and I'd have to say that the visuals were a lot more appealing in Wreck It Ralph anyways.... What are those guys thinking? They must be blind. *sad face*

the animation was pretty good, but plot was somewhat just so and so. not that bad, but not so great either.

I did like Brave, but it honestly wasn't that good of a movie. It definitely took an odd turn with the bears. :P

I'll admit, the animation for Brave was beautiful, but overall the movie was just "okay". Wreck-It-Ralph should have won.
Also, am I the only one that thinks Brave was too much like Brother Bear?

personally, i wish that Paranorman had some light shone on it, it was a superb film in both quality of animation (not to mention that the fact its all stop motion) and a very deep storyline. but regardless, it was never going to summon enough support to face a disney flick, and i still wish even then that W.I.R had taken it home :/

Yeah, I still haven't seen ParaNorman, but it was never one that piqued my interest. I may redbox it or something because people keep telling me it's good, but it's not super high on my priority list at the moment. XD

Hnnngggg idk, I can see both sides of that. Alot of Wreck it Ralph's story was very short and simplistic, and relied on simple interactions and gags to fill it up. it had /excellent/ character interaction and growth, but atleast imo a pretty cookie cutter story.

Brave was pretty similar in a lot of that. I personally did not connect to Brave as strongly as other people I know, but apparently its a mother/daughter thing. Regardless, I feel the story in Brave is also pretty cookie cutter, with great emphasis on character development, but I do feel Brave is slightly less cookie cutter than Wreck it Ralph. I would also argue that Brave had a better musical score, and better environmental design.

I like Wreck it Ralph better than Brave, but I can understand how it beat it out.
