Painting Prep: Bird and Serpent at War by Turtle-Arts Painting Prep: Bird and Serpent at War by Turtle-Arts
Another digital comp for a water color painting I'll be doing this week. The assignment this time around was to do a set of three images (one large, two small) with the same subject matter, but with a different compositional scheme. The top left is a circle composition. The lower left is an X composition. And the right image is technically a Steelyard composition, but with some S and circle elements mixed in. As per usual, I do a rough digital comp of the piece before I move to the full sized paintings, just so I have a reference to work from as far as colors and such. Also, in case any of you are wondering, I don't use watercolor paint to do my blacks in these. I use waterproof ink as it's much more practical. Similarly, all the line work is painted ink in the final pieces as well, after all the actual color gets painted. Not surprisingly, I always have some of the darkest value paintings in my class each week, since most watercolor people seem to favor lighter, more pastel colors. But I hate pastels so... yeah. XD When these are done, they'll have a more "stained-glassy" type line work all over, but I couldn't be bothered to draw it all in the sketch. lol! So, hopefully you enjoy this little comp for now. :> Also, if you're interested, you can see the sketch without colors over on my tumblr- [link]

Do you think you'll post the finished paintings?

Oh, this looks great! First of all, I love the palette you've chosen to work with; I'm a total sucker for gold/yellow and red and orange so this piece is totally after my heart. Secondly, like others said, that stained glass look is gorgeous and works very well (for the background) here. The different types of compositions are great, I love that idea of having two small head-on paintings and then one big one to show all the action. Dat birdy is gorgeous :> My only tip would be to have the feet of the bird in the x-compo painting be in the same position. I think having one up and one hanging down kind of 'ruins' the symmetry of the X-shape, y'know what I mean? Can't wait to see this finished!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it so far! Though, I'll have to admit, I did the feet in different positions purely so that the image wouldn't be totally symmetrical, since I think that would have been a bit boring. XD But thank you for your opinion on it! ^^

Yeah, totally symmetrical might be a bit boring - it just seemed so out of place when the rest of the bird was XD
