Classy Girls by Turtle-Arts Classy Girls by Turtle-Arts
A doodle to celebrate my new :icond-a-m-m-e-d: partner :iconpinaydoll:. Hooray! I didn't want a girl partner originally, but Mable's pretty cool and I think her and Clair will actually make a pretty sweet team.  Providing Mable can put up with Clair's stubbornness and total lack of understanding of social interaction and anything human. (Living alone in the jungle for 500 years will do that to you. lol) And the title is just because I was listening to the song "Classy Girls" while uploading this. XD

Clair is mine, of course
And Mable is :iconpinaydoll:'s

The group is like, two users get partnered together and one has a human character (That's Pinay's) and one has a "monster in humanoid form" (which, that's me.) and I dunno, it's a long story that I don't entirely fully understand. XD

The character design of both these girls are so badass! Clair looks like she'd rather be doing anything else then book reading, haha. :)

Lol, Clair can't read, so yeah pretty much. XD I imagine Mable is trying to teach her and get her interested in books, but she gets frustrated with them. ^^;

Little tiny demon Clair I see you peeping! Clair is one of my favourite designs of yours so I'm super excited that you'll be using her now :D It's cool how she looks muscular but still tiny heheh

I've been wondering about your shading for a while so I thought I'd ask; do you have a method to how you colour the shading so messily or do you just do it higgledy-piggledy? I watched a livestream you did some time ago and I just couldn't follow it. It always looks like it's had bits chipped away but it still looks really neat. Is it a brush that you use or just...however you feel like it? It's not as prominent in this one actually.

Thanks! ^^

And, well, it's kind of a combination of things.  Firstly, yes I have a custom brush that I use, but it doesn't automatically paint the dapple. I paint in the positive sections, and then use a combination of erasing, and re-applying paint to get the specific patterns that want.  If I'm doing it very quickly, it's usually more haphazard, but if I'm doing a more detailed version, then I spend more time figuring out the specific placement of each part.  So... basically, I use a custom brush to get the rough edge texture, but all of the actual "chipping" is painted by hand.

Ah I didn't think it'd be as simple as just a magic brush haha I use the 'spread' setting (I dunno which tab it's under) so add some pizzazz but that's it. I've been trying to be more varied and I did a small, inspired by Turtle attempt at dappled shading but nothing major. And it turned out a bit shoddy because I had no idea what I was doing lol I liked the recent one you did of Mier, Nezah and Toch. The notches were nicely placed and interesting.

Something I just remembered - even more off-topic, sorry - was that I recently wondered if you're style is inspired by the Jak series? I was looking for your old fanart of it, though I think you've stored it, and suddenly realised that your people-drawings have a similar squareness with smaller noses and whatnot. It's been a favourite series of mine since I was little so I was super-excited when I saw the connection...even if it's not entirely true. Last weirdo stalker question, I promise xD

Lol, well for the record, my painting style comes from the fact that I used to be an oil pastel artist before I switched to digital. So I paint a lot like how I used pastels- very spotty and dappled. XD

Jak... like Jak and Daxter? You know I've never really thought about it. :I I like that series, and I like it's art style. It's a little more disney-ish than I think I might like in my own art, but it's possible it might have left some influence on me over the years. XD But Jak2 is a personal favorite game of mine. :>

Ah cool, that makes sense haha

And yeah :P There's just something about your art that makes me think of Jak and Daxter. Though without the HUGE oddly shaped eyes lol I think it's the way you draw necks as well (somehow?). The way they're connected that doesn't look like an anime bobblehead is something I always look at heheh

Using the hoverboard makes me feel so cool

Lol, well personally, I've always considered my art to be kind of an amalgamation of Western and Eastern style.  Because when I was a kid, I drew very American style (Disney, Warner Brothers type stuff) and then when I was a little older, I drew anime because my brother did (lol), and then I decided I didn't like drawing anime after a couple years and started creating my own style, which has just been developing since then.  I kind of take aspects I like from a variety of styles.  Like, I enjoy the wide range of realistic facial and body expression found in American work that is often absent in Japanese.  But then, I enjoy some of the wilder, more "designed" expressions in Japaneses animation, as well as the lavish costuming, and general "over-the-top" approach to things. But then, I also enjoy the grit and quirkiness you find in a lot of European animation.

Basically, I take what I like and leave the rest alone. XD

And the hoverboard was cool, but I always like the hoverbike best. XD

Seriously, you sound like my soulmate haha Whatever you do is awesome anyway  I always enjoy seeing your art in my watch list c:

I don't think I ever got the hoverbike, though my brother probably did. I used to just always put a song on that I liked, whacked a Krimzon Guard, and then boarded around whilst being chased by them like I was the coolest person alive xD So badass!
